to welcome guest speaker Vanessa Lovisa-Gambin, from Toronto, Canada.
Vanessa will speak about her Ph.D. thesis entitled “Hold on and Stay Connected.” An Italian Immigrant Presence in Canada: Friulian Identity and Cultural Preservation, 1932-1990.

Vanessa’s family is from the region of Friuli Venezia-Giulia, Italy. Her maternal side is from San Giovanni di Casarsa, San Giorgio della Richinvelda, and Rauscedo, while the paternal side is from Fagnigola and Panigai (Pravisdomini), which are located a short distance from the city of Pordenone. She is heavily involved with Famee Furlane Toronto in her capacity as President of young social group the “20-Somethings.”
Vanessa is studying 20th-century Canadian history, with an emphasis on immigration. Her dissertation focuses on Northern Italian immigrant roles within the communities they built in Canada in a pre and post WWII context, with a particular focus on cultural transmission and associational involvement. Vanessa completed her Honours BA and Masters in History at York University and is currently completing her Ph.D. at McMaster University.
